The Professional Hair Dressers and Beauticians Association (PHABA) of Sri Lanka was established in February 2006 with the unstinted support and co-operation of leading hair dressers & beauticians in the country, to uplift the standards of the Hair Care industry. Educating the general mass on hair and beauty care, especially focusing rural areas, the association was able to recruit a membership of over 2000 and also meaningfully touch the lives of well over 100,000 consumers in its first year operations.
There is a minimum of 10,000 barber salons and over 5,000 hairdressing salons in Sri Lanka. And there are 5,000-10,000 entrants to the industry annually with basic understanding of the industry. Today, the market is flooded with local and international hair care products; all competing for a share in the salon’s market . There is also a lack of professional bodies in Sri Lanka to groom potential hairdressers. The existing industry professionals do not have the opportunity to provide young entrants with the necessary exposure and encouragement to bloom.
Therefore we realised that there's a crucial necessity for training and education of new entrants to enhance their skills towards world class standards. We needed to train and develop future hair dressers & beauticians through one association where we could provide necessary education, knowledge and exposure to showcase the talent of new entrants. Through this association we want to upgrade standard of the hair dressing profession throughout Sri Lanka and to establish a strong link among the industry both locally and internationally and thereby share knowledge/expertise.
The Association realised its vision within the first 6 months of its inception by conducting numerous workshops across the country. On account of these efforts, PHABA Sri Lanka has now successfully enrolled over 2000 members.
